• Why is the liver so important?

  As one of the most important organs, the liver functions by eliminating many substances that enter the body on a consistent basis. The liver's job is to sort and purge all of these harmful substances, expelling them from the body. The body regularly does this to stay healthy and, more importantly, stay alive, as the liver supports routine metabolic processes involved in maintaining internal balance. • What are the benefits of detoxification?

  Detoxification is a metabolic process in the body that involves the removal of toxins, such as oxidative stress or chemicals we are exposed to in the air we breathe, and the liver is the body’s primary filter for these toxins. Healthy liver function can contribute to healthy bile production and the detoxification of chemicals into less harmful compounds while also supporting immune function and cellular health.

• What is glutathione, and why is it important in the detoxification process?

  Glutathione performs two tasks in the detoxification process: First, it quenches free radicals created when the liver neutralizes toxins in Phase 1 of detoxification; second, it combines with toxic chemicals, such as those found in cigarette smoke, automobile exhaust and deadly polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), so they can be safely excreted. Glutathione also detoxifies substances in the intestines before they can be absorbed into your bloodstream, and it is thought to protect your stomach lining from the free radical effects of high amounts of stomach acid. High glutathione levels promote a healthy immune system. • What are some things you should eliminate from your lifestyle to promote healthy detoxification?

  Processed foods and refined sugars: Eat fewer processed foods (canned and packaged foods, fortified foods and fast food). Avoiding refined sugars, such as cookies and crackers, can help decrease stimulation of insulin secretion during cleansing. Additionally, stay away from artificial sweeteners, MSG and any other ingredients that don’t occur naturally in foods to avoid additional stress on the liver.
  Smoking: Cigarettes contain thousands of toxic chemicals.
  Soft drinks: Phosphoric acid can upset your body’s pH balance; it can also pull much-needed calcium from your bones if you consume large quantities.
  Hydrogenated oils: Foods go through hydrogenation to increase their stability and storage time; this process increases the saturation of the fats in food. Margarines, spreads, cooking fats and commercially baked foods contain hydrogenated fats.

• What’s the difference between a liver detox and a weight loss detox?
